A ship carrying 9,202 tons out of more than 40,000 tons of sulfur expected to reach cashew farmers in the 2025/26 season has arrived at Mtwara Port from Turkey.

This was stated by the Director General of the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania, Mr. Francis Alfred, while addressing to the media at Mtwara Port. He explained that for the 2025/2026 season, the Cashew Industry expects to have over 50,000 tons of inputs, including more than 10,000 tons carried over from the 2024/2025 season. These inputs will be distributed to farmers early to ensure that they get them timely.

The Director General of Cashewnut Board of Tanzania also urged all cashew farmers to update their information in the Cashew farmers database through agricultural officers employed by the Government under the Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT) program at the village offices where their farms are located so as to benefit from the subsidized inputs, which are distributed free of charge by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Meanwhile, the Manager of Mtwara Port, Mr. Ferdinand Nyathi, stated that the port continues to handle ships carrying cashew pesticides and affirmed that Mtwara Port is well prepared to ensure proper handling of these agricultural inputs and other necessary arrangements to ensure efficient operations ready for inputs to be distributed to farmers.

Speaking on behalf of the Mtwara Regional Commissioner, the District Commissioner of Tandahimba, Colonel Michael Mtenjele, expressed gratitude to President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for giving priority to cashew farmers. He also assured that the regional government will continue to support Mtwara Port in ensuring that its operations run smoothly as required.
