Cashew farmers under the MAMCU Cooperative Union have successfully sold a total of 35,445,155 kilograms of cashewnuts in their first auction held at the Nanyamba Town Council Hall in Mtwara Region. The cashews were sold at a top price of TSh 2,510 per kilo and a lowest price of TSh 2,310 per kilo.
Speaking shortly after the auction, TMX Chief Executive Officer, Godfrey Malekano, said that this season farmers have significantly improved the quality of their cashewnuts. He added that there is great optimism that the trend will continue, enabling farmers to earn higher incomes for their own development and that of their communities.
For his part, the Acting Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies for Mtwara Region, Robert Nsunza, urged cooperative leaders to ensure that payments to farmers are made promptly to build trust and motivate them to increase production.
To date, a total of 93,879,726 kilograms of Raw Cashew Nuts (RCN) have been sold through all auctions.
